Lecture "Perspectives of Translation in (African) German Studies" by Dr. Mayanja (Institute of German Studies and Comparative Literature, University of Padeborn)

African scholars of German Studies are subjected to constant translation processes at various levels in their capacity as mediators between German speaking countries and their countries of origin. Subsequently, Translation Studies has become an increasingly important subject in German Studies at African universities. This paper examines the interdependencies between “traditional” German Studies and Translation by focussing on the relevance of current trends in translation theory and practice for Intercultural German Studies in Africa. It also seeks to deconstruct existing dichotomies in Translation Studies by opting for a more dynamic approach as a form of knowledge production in African German Studies. Using the translation project in the German Masters programme at the University of Nairobi  Übersetzungsgermanistik and the Master of Arts in Language Development at the Bishop Barham College Kabale, Uganda as case studies, the paper offers some concrete areas of implementation and research.
