This talk offers an insight into ongoing research into a “History of Making Things” in Ghana and Nigeria. It turns to ways in which colonial approaches to a variety of practices classed under “arts and crafts” or small-scale and cottage industries were navigated and negotiated in Ghana and Nigeria, ca. 1930s-1960s. For this, it studies colonial conceptions and layouts for the “development” and “encouragement” of “arts and crafts” and “local industries”. Moreso, it seeks to highlight the ways in which practitioners in Ghana and Nigeria navigated such changing regimes of “making things” by turning to their funding applications and other appeals to colonial administrators.
