Ngũgĩ wa Thiong‘o (1938-2025)

28.05.2025

Prof. Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o passed away on 28 May 2025 at the age of 87.

We mourn the loss of a great writer, contemporary witness, promoter of African languages as languages of literature and education, a pioneering thinker on cultural decolonisation, and an open and friendly conversation partner, whom we had the privilege of meeting in May 2017 during his keynote lecture at the Department of African Studies and his public reading in the Main Library of the University of Vienna. Our thoughts are with his family, his children and grandchildren.
