 Profil

Martina Kopf ist Senior Lecturer für Afrikanische Literaturen. In der Forschung beschäftigt sie sich mit Entwicklungstheorie und -kritik im Schreiben afrikanischer Autor*innen (Kenia) und der Ideengeschichte von Entwicklung in Afrika (Fokus koloniale Diskurse 1930-1950). Darüber hinaus arbeitet sie zu afro-feministischem und intersektionalem feministischem Denken sowie zu Fragen literarischer Zeugenschaft, insbesondere in Bezug auf den Genozid in Ruanda und in Bezug auf sexualisierte Gewalt.

Nach ihrer Promotion in Afrikawissenschaften an der Universität Wien war sie fünf Jahre Afrika-Redakteurin bei Südwind – Magazin für Internationale Politik, Kultur und Entwicklung. Sie war Fellow am Centre for Global Cooperation Research in Deutschland und Gastprofessorin am Institut für Internationale Entwicklung in Wien und hat Forschungserfahrung in Kenia, Senegal und Kamerun.

Neben ihren Forschungsgebieten lehrt sie am Institut allgemeine Theorie und Kritik afrikanischer Literatur und Literaturgeschichte Afrikas (Ost- und Westafrika).

    Concepts of development in postcolonial Kenyan literature

    Short description:
    This project looks at Anglophone works by Kenyan writers through the lens of development theory and critique. Kenya is a country with a fascinating and vibrant literary culture, that has witnessed huge social and economic transformations since independence, and a country that has been a hub for the international development industry for the wider region of East Africa. This project is interested in how Kenyan writers have witnessed, shaped and responded to what the Latin American anthropologist Arturo Escobar (1991; 1995) described as ‘the ‘development encounter’, meaning a continuation and substitution of the colonial encounter, that has become a defining experience of the so-called global South. Furthermore, it is interested in conceptual and methodological issues with regard to literary studies approaches to the history and critique of development in Africa.
