"The exchange programme which took place during the Winter Semester of the 2018/2019 academic year offered me the opportunity to study in an academic and social environment that is significantly different from that of my home University. This new environment came with enormous benefits. Highlights of which include: the vast array of academic literature I encountered at the various libraries I visited, including online resources; the academic mentoring culture of the faculty of the host department – the Department of African Studies; the useful insights I received from the faculty and PhD peers on my thesis at various seminars, peer meetings and personal consultations; and finally, the wonderful social experiences I shared. Particular emphasis is given to the social experiences, as in no small way, they provided the warmth which I am used to in the tropical climate back home in Ghana, even though I was freezing in the cold of the winter!"

Maxima Missodey

"It was a privilege to have been affiliated to the Department of African Studies as an Erasmus plus Exchange Student. Regardless of my late arrival, in the middle of the winter semester, the vibrant nature of the Institute offered me a unique experience as an exchange student. Not only did I get the opportunity to participate in some classes, I also attended seminars of students and visiting scholars as well as a book launch.

The highlight of my stay was the opportunity to present progress on my thesis at a specially organized colloquium by the department. The useful feedback I got from the colloquium served as an added boost in the writing of my thesis.

The opportunity to network through my interactions with other graduate students and faculty and my participation in the extra-curricular activities of the institute such as the Vienna African Writers Club meetings and the movie night organized for students of Swahili contributed in giving me an experience I consider holistic as a student of Sociology."
