Carl Bodenstein is a postdoctoral researcher working for the chair "Infrastructuring Urban Futures" at the Faculty of Geoscience and Earth Observation of the University of Twente (NL). His academic background is rooted in the fields of African social and historical studies. Specifically, his previous academic focus was directed towards historical geographies of urban Africa. Using historical GIS (Geographical Information Systems), sociological fieldwork, and archival research he studied urban and infrastructural planning histories as well as societal and morphological trajectories of Livingstone, a town in south-western Zambia, with a focus on late colonial and early postcolonial urban developments. His current academic interests include infrastructural developments of peri-urban spaces in African small-and medium-sized towns (SMSTs). He is particularly interested in blue and green infrastructures, such as the role of urban soils in historical and current perspective. Methodologically, he focuses on exploring the possibilities of including GIS and remote sensing to historical and social scientific scholarship, such as participatory mapping and public participation GIS (PPGIS).
