Project Description:

The West African Ebola outbreak of 2013-16 caused significant loss of life and huge social and economic disruption in the countries most seriously affected: Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea. Fatality rates were extremely high: according to WHO, of 28,611 recorded cases 11,307 were fatal. The outbreak was met with an hysterical response in the international media, resulting in the dissemination of misinformation and a deepening sense of a global pandemic. The international management of the crisis received much criticism, and anthropologists, in particular, made important contributions to the development of more effective policies to bring the outbreak under control, notably by promoting the understanding of the social context of the disease and recognising the value of indigenous responses.

In Sierra Leone, in the immediate aftermath of the Ebola epidemic, there were a number of attempts to memorialise the traumatic experience and to ensure that lessons learnt during the crisis were not forgotten. Some of this commemoration was focused around the large cemeteries in which victims of the epidemic were interred, including the vast cemetery outside Waterloo, in Sierra Leone’s Western Area. Other initiatives have included the proposed establishment of a National Ebola Museum and Archive on the campus of Njala University near Bo. Meanwhile, the crisis is, of course, remembered in many informal ways, not least by the families of those who lost loved ones to the epidemic and who have had to rebuild their lives in the shadow of this loss.

This PhD project seeks to explore how ‘Ebola’ is remembered both publicly and privately in Sierra Leone. It will investigate this ethnographically through engagement with a range of ‘sites of memory’, including national and local cemeteries, material legacies, archival traces, initiatives such as the National Ebola Museum and Archive, and, most importantly, in the family. In public discourse, it asks to what purpose are attempts to maintain a national memory of the crisis directed. How does this interface with continuing calls for better ‘pandemic preparedness’? In the private sphere, the project investigates the mnemonic practices of families affected by the epidemic, as well as that of survivors. How is the crisis maintained in people’s consciousness? How does the Ebola crisis become fused with other traumatic episodes in Sierra Leone’s recent past – its decade-long conflict, catastrophic landslides.

A core objective of the project will be to collect oral accounts of the Ebola crisis, including the testimonies of survivors, family members, burial team members, hotline operators, nurses, doctors and volunteers. This will be coordinated with colleagues at the National Ebola Museum and Archive, where recordings and transcriptions will be deposited. It is hoped that the candidate will contribute to the development of displays and outreach programmes at the Museum.

The studentship is for a duration of three years. The successful candidate will be initially registered as a MPhil student. In the first year (2020-21), the candidate will undertake research methods training and project development, taking advantage of taught courses in both SOAS and LSHTM, culminating in upgrade to PhD registration. The second year (2021-22) will be spent conducting fieldwork in Sierra Leone. The third year (2022-23) will be spent writing up in London.


Candidate Requirements:

We invite applications from outstanding and highly motivated candidates who have a Masters degree in anthropology at merit or distinction level (with a minimum grade of 65% for their dissertation), and an undergraduate degree in anthropology or other relevant discipline. Experience of travelling or working in West Africa would be advantageous.

The project ‘Individuation in the grammar: singulatives at the intersection of morphology and semantics’ (led by Dr Silva Nurmio) seeks to understand the formation, distribution, meaning and usage of singulatives (derived noun forms denoting ‘one’ or ‘a unit’) cross-linguistically. The doctoral candidate will be working with a sample of languages, creating a database of singulative forms and examining specific research questions within this project. The ideal applicant is a highly motivated student with a background in linguistic typology, morphology, or a closely related field, and a completed MA-degree (or equivalent) by the start of the position. Preference will be given to candidates wishing to work on the singulative in African languages. An interest in theoretical linguistics and the philosophy of language is also an asset.

The University of Helsinki offers a salary dependent on qualifications and work experience. The salary will be based on levels 2–4 of the job requirement scheme for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities. In addition, the appointee shall be paid a salary component based on personal work performance. The salary will be EUR 2130–3500 per month, depending on the appointee’s qualifications and work experience. The appointment starts with a probationary period of six months.

The Nordic Africa Institute (NAI), a Swedish public authority located in Uppsala, Sweden, is a center of excellence for knowledge on contemporary Africa. We are recruiting a Head of Research, who will drive and develop the Institute’s research and policy work, and contribute to strengthening our international reputation as a relevant and reputable independent research institute.

The Institute has since its founding in 1962 been an important research, documentation and information center on modern Africa in the Nordic countries. It is jointly financed by the governments of Sweden, Finland and Iceland, and promotes research on and knowledge of contemporary Africa in the Nordic countries, as well as cooperation between mainly African and Nordic researchers. NAI also disseminates information on current African issues, through publications, seminars, conferences and various policy-related activities. Role of the position within the Institute
The Head of Research is responsible for strategically and operationally leading the work of the Research Unit. The Research Unit consists of different categories of senior researchers including the core-funded researchers, externally funded researchers, guest researchers and research associates. The Head of Research is responsible for contributing to the goals of the Institute’s Strategy and for effectively managing human and financial resources within the Unit. She/he is a member of the Institute’s management team that advises and supports the Director of the Institute in the day-to-day running of the Institute. The Head of Research takes decisions according to delegation of authority.

The Head of Research reports to the Director of the Institute.

Overall responsibility
The Head of Research has the overall responsibility for developing and implementing the overall research activities of the Institute, including fund-raising, strengthening international research cooperation, developing strategic partnerships and collaborating with Africa experts and institutions in the Nordic and African countries. She/he will guide and support the individual and team related work of the Research Unit, actively contribute to synergies within the Institute, develop systematic sharing of knowledge, while collaborating with other head of units to execute the mandate of the Institute.

She/he will develop and operationalize the structures needed to develop the team, the individual competences and contribute to meeting the goals of the Institute. The Head of Research will be responsible for the academic content of the research programmes and related activities, such as scholarships and exchange programmes, visiting fellowships, conferences, policy dialogues, seminars and lectures. She/he is visionary, keeping track of and steering the internal discussion on emerging trends and future research areas relevant for contributing to positive development in Africa.

As a member of the Institute’s management team, the Head of Research has a shared responsibility for the Institute’s development and achievement of its mission and the overall goals.

The Head of Research tasks are to:

Title equivalent to Associate Professor in social sciences/humanities;

Terms of employmentThe position as Head of Research at the Nordic Africa Institute is offered as a full time (100%) employment based in Uppsala, Sweden. The employment contract offered is a permanent position as senior researcher and with an appointment as Head of Research for a period of five years. A probationary period of six months will apply for the position.
